Dr. K. M. Cherian is a well-known cardiac surgeon and healthcare innovator, famous for his important work in cardiothoracic surgery. In 1975, he completed India’s first successful coronary artery bypass surgery and later performed the first heart transplant in the country after brain death was legalized. His notable achievements also include India’s first heart-lung transplant, pediatric heart transplant, and laser heart surgery (TMR). With many years of experience, he has trained with famous cardiac surgeons like Dr. John W. Kirklin and Dr. Albert Starr.

Dr. Cherian has shown great leadership by founding important healthcare facilities, such as Frontier Lifeline Hospital and Frontier Mediville, which is India’s first medical SEZ and science park. He was also instrumental in starting the Madras Medical Mission (MMM) and the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). His charitable work includes the St. Gregorios Cardio Vascular Centre in Kerala, and he oversees The Study – L’ecole International, a top CBSE school in Puducherry.

He has received the Padma Shri Award and is the first Indian to serve as President of the World Congress of Thoracic Cardiac Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Cherian was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree and has been honored by the WSCTS, with his name carved in stone in Kos, Greece.
